A poem a week for 2012 – A record of a year in the life of…

2012 Olympic Games - Opening CeremonyOlympians....and flag waving

After Korea,
concerns and fears
opening tears?

-Questions fade
Grand parade
Quirky and British

- Not stiff upper lippish -
Not pompous or stuffy
but inclusive and striking

Celebrating strengths
and forging a future
from links with the past.

Tremendous vision
Audience agasp
A brilliant conception

Fantastic reception
Levelling, inspiring
Intriguing, exciting.

-For this struggling age
A defining stage...

A poem a week for 2012 – A record of a year in the life of…

…No Marx

The child audience awaits, little to do
Except twiddle their thumbs and look at their shoes
They won’t act like they’re above him, nor will you
Where’s the spirit? An almost blue collared accent
There’s no such thing as a flea’s lunch
Other than to a flea
Brunch, a lazy lean energetic shadow,
Intellectual equivalent of a pea
Snatched and spent from the cradle
An estate agent’s ladle raising issues
Genuine admiration is so much to the grave
From the cradle, a bookend
No marks, no words, no blame
The throttle of good intentions
Like exclamation marks in detentions, declaring
A life that dare not speak its shame

Independence Day

A poem a week for 2012 - A record of a year in the life of...

(worn with pride)
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Free, free as a berk
I will search for all I’m worth
For a way to control my fate
To put a price on my silver plate
They fought for us, for our thoughts
For what it was that we were taught
To liberate the imprisoned mind
For to give the freedom to be behind

Testing times, testing times
The tyranny of targets
The bustling rags of busy markets
The concept of the end of crime
And in the end it hardly matters
Mammon begets not any freedom from madmen
The promise we will not be saddened
When our callow beliefs are shattered

A poem a week for 2012 - A record of a year in the life of...

...Traditional British Village Fetes

Summer days;
Golden sun
Bunting, scones
Childish fun.

WI pickles,
Cakes and flowers;
Coconut shies,
Sudden showers.

Megaphone squarks,
Village bands;
Art shows, Dog shows
Busy hands.

Tug of war,
Bouncy castles
Morris Men,
Tombola parcels.

Village life;
Local fayre
Bric a brac,
Share and care.

Traditional trades
Historical places,
British summer
Stays the traces.
